Recent Successes

McLane Environmental is one of the nation’s leading providers of quantitative ground water services. We are a dynamic company of talented professionals who recognize the complexities of today's environmental problems. We blend technical expertise and strategic thinking to provide our clients with effective solutions for the most challenging ground water projects. Below is a select list of recent projects that the staff of McLane Environmental has successfully completed.

WATER SUPPLY

  • Saltwater Intrusion Investigations – performed complex density-dependent flow modeling to evaluate new well field sites in areas of possible saltwater intrusion, and developed strategies for operating existing well fields to prevent saltwater intrusion impacts.
  • Sole Source Aquifer Management – provided technical assistance to communities that rely on a sole source aquifer, by conducting investigations and modeling analyses combined with GIS to develop sustainable ground water development and management plans, and to support the acquisition of valuable new sources of water supply.
  • Wastewater Disposal – performed coastal zone modeling studies and presented at public hearings to assist a New England community in designing a centralized waste water treatment and disposal system in a sensitive ecological area, and successfully moved the project through the regulatory permitting process.

GROUND WATER MODELING

  • Modeling Oversight and Development – assisted a large environmental engineering firm in the development and review of ground water models that evaluated remedial alternatives and protection for vital drinking water sources.
  • Nitrogen loading – conducted ground water modeling to support nitrogen loading analyses for a wastewater treatment plant design, and several land development studies.
  • Expert Review – provided technical peer review and critical evaluation of ground water model applications as part of technical review teams, expert panels, and environmental litigation.
  • Education and Training – provided lectures on hydrogeology and modeling topics in short courses and training courses sponsored by universities, government agencies and professional organizations. We have recently presented training sessions nationwide on innovative technologies to the Department of Navy, and have developed a new educational course on forensic environmental techniques.

SITE INVESTIGATION/REMEDIATION

  • Radioactive Waste Plume Remediation – performed flow and contaminant transport modeling to support engineering decisions for a challenging ground water remediation problem at a Department of Energy facility at which a commingled uranium and nitrate plume was threatening a major drinking water reservoir.
  • Superfund Site Remediation Support – performed field data analysis and flow and transport modeling for a landfill at which chlorinated solvents impacted ground water threatened a nearby creek, to evaluate the potential effectiveness of various remedial alternatives and to provide a framework for monitored natural attenuation investigations.
  • Expert Panel Review Team – provided scientific review and assistance to U.S. Government facilities undergoing site investigations and remediation for contaminants including biological agents, unexploded ordnance and radioactive waste.

LITIGATION SUPPORT

  • Perchlorate Litigation – provided expert support services in two of the largest perchlorate litigation cases in the United States.
  • MtBE Litigation – provided expert support services in one of the largest MtBE litigation cases in the United States.
  • Natural Resource Damage (NRD) Litigation – conducted complex ground water data analyses, ground water modeling, geostatistical analyses and resource evaluation analyses to assist a client in defeating a potentially costly NRD claim at a southwestern Superfund Site.
  • Chlorinated Solvent Toxic Tort Litigation – assisted client in successfully defending against an expensive toxic tort claim at a western electronics facility.
  • Insurance Cost Recovery Litigation – assisted clients in recovering millions of dollars in historical remediation costs as part of several larger insurance litigation cases involving a variety of timing, ownership, source identification and remedial response issues.
  • Cost Allocation – assisted client in successful cost allocation settlement for remedial response costs at an arsenic contaminated Superfund site in the eastern U.S.
  • GIS and Data Visualization – depicted both current and historical data on a suite of GIS maps and overlays for the site of interest; plotted subsurface data in a variety of three-dimensional formats; and provided these graphics available to the litigation team instantaneously over a secure internet link.
